Sirolo
Situated picturesquely on the southern slopes
of mount Conero, the territory of Sirolo was already inhabited
during the paleolithic era. In the 9th c. B.C. the Piceny
conquered it and lived there untill the 3rd c. B.C. Interesting
remains of their presence can be found in the archeologic
area “I Pini”. Then the territory was under
the rule of the Romans. In the Middle Ages, to defend itself
from barbarians and pirates, Sirolo became a fortress with
alleys, towers and a hurdle lay-out of small streets. In
the 11th c. it was a fief of Cortesi Count, nobles of Franco-German
stock who donated St. Peter’s Church to the Benedettini
friars in 1038. The fief was then given to the Pope. Under
the Papal rule new churches were built. The inhabitans of
Sirolo, proud of their traditions, of their history and
of the beauty of their territory welcome visitors with a
lot of valid initiatives among which the summer theatre
season in the open theatre “Alle Cave”. The
symbol of the town is the Branzino, a fish living in its
clear sea waters. Wild beaches, steep cliffs, caves, and
white rocks covered with pine-forests overlooking transparent
sea-waters attract those visitors who appreciate wild incontaminate
nature.
