Numana
In the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. Numana was
a very important Greek trade centre. Goods coming from Greece
and intended to the regions of the North and of the Piceno
poured into its port. In the Middle Ages Numana slowly but
inexorably declined because of earthquakes and sacks. It
became a humble fishing village. At the beginning of 1900
it was rediscovered by some rich and noble Roman people
who transformed it into their summer residence. Today it
is a modern summer vacation centre with a well equipped
port for sailing and boating. It is in the hearth of the
Conero Mountain Park which is a protected area of 580 hectares
rich in suggestive places such as Portonovo Bay, Due Sorelle
Beach and a lot of walking routes and alleys winding through
a Mediterranean vegetation.
