Fabriano
Ancient are its origins. The first sure mention
of a locality with this name dates back to 1065 but it is
in a document of 1160 that two feudal castles erected on
the banks of the Giano River, one opposite the other, are
spoken about. In the 12th c. Fabriano is a free commune
and has a great ecnomic, social and artistic development.
It is ruled by Francesco Sforza too, but in 1444 it is annexed
to the Papal State and its power slowly declines to flourish
again at the end of the 18th c. when the paper industry
develops thanks to the industrialist Pietro Miliani who
was born there in 1744. Fabriano is famous all over the
world as “The City of Paper” nowadays too. Many
famous people were born in Fabriano. Among the painters
we remember Gentile da Fabriano (1370-1427).
